Style advice I stole from my 4 year old. Shop at crew cuts (jcrew for kids) and wear purple.

Thrifting for clothes always sounds more glamourous than it truly is. Shame on fashion bloggers for making it sound so fabulous. There is really a lot of touching a lot of hideously, ugly things to maybe, by chance, hopefully, get lucky finding one semi-decent thing. Well I had one of those days. I touched a LOT of ugly ugly ugly things. And even tried some on just for fun, but in the end my sacrificing of time and energy paid off. I found an awesome mens Pendleton vest. Bonus, it looked good with my current outfit so I wore it out of the store (completely embarrassing my husband!) so worth it.

BEFORE: ugly outfit NOT happy

AFTER: Cute outfit VERY happy!

And well I wouldn't be a typical fashion blogger if I didn't use my instagram picture now would I?

Since my fashion counterpart Shaynah has been doing plenty of flag-flying lately (herehere, and here), I'm going to do a little flag-flying of my own. Trust me, I am proud to be an American - but that doesn't mean I secretly wish (think) that I was (am) British. I drive a Mini Cooper named Basil, have a closet full of Ben Sherman, only listen to British Rock, wear a Union Jack on my winter coat lapel, and my favorite fashion era is 60's MOD...and of course this post will prove that I like to go overboard.

blah, blah, blah. So I see people all sort of bizarre things on lookbook and get hyped. So I thought I would try it, and it looks like people in cyber space still don't want to welcome me with open arms and parades.  However, I was kind of fond of my little experiment and I can't wait to wear this on a real day and completely embarrass my husband. I am sure my mother would love if I wore it to dinner with her. She is the one who talked me into buying this tutu tank dress. Maybe she is having regrets about not putting me in ballet? At any rate my vintage american flag looks pretty rad hanging in the garage. But don't ask me why I am hanging in the garage... I guess it just must mean need more friends.

If you are my friend and this post makes you embarrassed to know me then mission accomplished.

I am all about simplicity in the summer, especially here in Nashville where the temperatures have been in the 100s. Layered dresses and some boots - what else do you need?

Dang it my iphone charger is popping out of my clutch.  Not professional.

Lush and green sites everywhere you look these days. How I love the summer months. I think the flowers warm my soul more than the sun. My mom has amazing gardens. They keep reminding me of how wonderful it is to be a girl. So, I am full force on frills and lace. My alter ego (ruffledsnob) is presumably at peace with my wardrobe choices lately. Flouncy and bird-like. Just the way it should be.

I look at this and see so many things. DRIFTER.

So if you can even get past my cute son (and his cheeks) and look at my outfit you may realize that, YES, I am wearing velvet in the summer. It happens. These shorts are beyond comfort. Also they are a color that is not really in my wardrobe. The waist band of them is super cute too ( I should be a better blogger and show you but I am not.) And can we all just ignore my un-washed hair? thanks. Anyways, lets celebrate 90 degrees and velvet!

ps isn't my parents' little playhouse (complete with rose bushes) completely, positively, absolutely something straight out of dreamland?! My mom has a lovely yard.

A good blogger probably would have exfoliated and put lotion on their knees before doing a photo shoot, but good thing we aren't good bloggers here at layeredblack. My knees are full of scars anyways. So do you love my new obsession with lipstick? Oh goodie, me too! This is NARS schiap. It has fully made me the mom who wears lipstick with sweatpants! (I know I thought I would never wear sweatpants too)

I suppose you saw that awesome cloud in the background of the 3rd picture stealing my thunder (no pun intended). Yeah isn't that cloud neat? Like 5 seconds after this picture it nearly matched my lipstick, but only for a split second. The sky is funny that way. Now if it could only match my cool neon belt...
